Michele Walker
College Principal
Welcome to 2026
A warm welcome to our College community as we begin a new and exciting year. We have had a great start to 2026, with students settling in well and staff returning smoothly to the College.
On Sunday, 1 February, we welcomed a new cohort of Year 10 and Year 11 students. Our residential team delivered a comprehensive transition program to familiarise and prepare students for their first day of school. The success of the program was evident in the smooth start experienced by all.
During the first few weeks at the College, we focus on setting clear standards and expectations across all areas. For students, this includes wearing the correct uniform, wearing it appropriately, and adhering to our jewellery policy.
Compass Workshop
Compass is our key communication platform for students, parents, and staff. To support parents and carers in using Compass, a parent workshop will be held on Friday, 27 February.
2026 Year 12 Prefects
I am pleased to announce our 2026 School Captains, Louis Ford and Beth Lockwood. Our Year 12 Prefects are Ida Brown, Phebee Forman, Tomas Lynch, and Dashel Shanhun.
Staffing Updates
We have welcomed several new staff to the College this year:
Fiona Powley – Teacher, English
Cale Hill – Teacher, English (6-month appointment)
Ed Grant – Teacher, Design and Technology
Romy Stoner – School Psychologist
Craig Walker – Technical Officer Agricultural Instruction
Almira Dall – Technical Officer Agricultural Instruction
As we begin the year, we continue to be guided by our College motto — Plant, Grow, Harvest — supporting students as they settle in and set strong foundations. I look forward to working with students, staff, and families throughout Term 1.
Alf Mungioli
Deputy Principal
A very positive start
Seeing the Year 10 students and new Year 11 students arrive and commence their first day was similar to watching Pre-Primary students on their first day of school. There was a mix of emotions, including eagerness, nervousness and excitement about starting a new chapter. Most students have settled in well and are engaging positively with the variety of dynamic programs on offer.
Year 11 and 12 students have also started the term strongly. There is a noticeable positive energy and focus on producing quality work, both in and out of the classroom.
Many students are adjusting to higher expectations, new staff, new rules and new tasks as part of their transition to the Western Australian College of Agriculture – Denmark. Thank you to parents and staff for supporting these expectations and for encouraging students to approach their time at the College in a mature and responsible manner.
Assessment Policy
The College Assessment Policy is attached and has been presented to all students. It is important that students and families are familiar with the conditions and requirements, particularly in relation to absences when assessments are due or when tests are scheduled.
Timetables and classes
Most students have now settled into their coursework. Some continued and new adjustments include:
Class sizes across Years 10–12 continue to support student success. A small number of classes have higher numbers as a result of offering broader opportunities for students at the College.
ATAR classes continue to operate with smaller class sizes, supported by supervised and structured study time. Over the past three years, ATAR average scores have been the highest they have been in many years.
A continued focus on Farm Skills and additional support for students completing Certificate II in Agriculture. Students participate in targeted skill development through practical activities, observations and demonstrations on the Farm.
Year 10 students have dedicated Farm time, along with additional Farm Skills support to prepare them for managing Farm tasks.
Attendance
We understand that family commitments and personal health issues can occasionally impact student attendance.
Late last year, a number of students were identified as having attendance concerns. Families were encouraged to support their child and the College by maintaining regular attendance. In some cases, students were leaving site early on Fridays or returning late after weekends, which had a negative impact on coursework and learning engagement.
The College aims to prepare students for workplace expectations. High attendance supports stronger work habits, improves employment prospects and increases the likelihood of successful course completion. Attendance reviews will be conducted every 5–6 weeks.
2026 Year 11 & 12 ATAR University Tour Camp
WACOA – Denmark will be inviting Year 11 and Year 12 students to attend a camp to visit the Murdoch University Open Day (Saturday) and Curtin University Open Day (Sunday). This opportunity is available to students enrolled in two or more ATAR subjects. Students not currently enrolled in ATAR, but who aspire to university entry through alternative pathways after Year 12, may also apply if places are available.
With 25 places available, preference will be given to ATAR students and those who did not attend the tour last year. Students and staff will attend both Open Days and participate in scheduled presentations and activities.
The Year 11 & 12 ATAR University Tour Camp is expected to depart WACOA – Denmark at 1.30pm on Friday 27 March and return at approximately 6.30pm on Sunday 29 March. All students will travel in a College vehicle. Day students will need to arrange their own transport to and from the College before departure and after return. Further information, including costs, will be provided shortly.
